Vernon D. Schmale, 75 years of age, of Beatrice, passed away February 13, 2017 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on January 17, 1942 in Beatrice to Elmer John Henry and Alena Elizabeth “Liz” (Weber) Schmale. Vernon was baptized and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. He attended Beatrice High School before enlisting in the United States Army from 3/4/1960 to 2/19/1963 Vernon married Shirley Nickeson on April 26, 1964 in Beatrice. He worked for Melvin Sauder and Don Beach before owning and operating Schmale Construction from 1977 to 2015 and also owned a Heritage Vinyl Fencing dealership. Vernon was a member of the Beatrice American Legion and enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, driving his ’71 Corvette and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 52 years, Shirley; son, Rodney Schmale and wife Eileen of Beatrice; daughter, Kristie Tallon and husband Dave of Raymond; 5 grandchildren, Gina Tremain and husband TJ, Autumn Schmale, Cole Schmale, Ashley Tallon, Cody Tallon; great-grandson, Westley Tremain; sister, Linda Rulla; brother-in-law, Tom Vanover; sisters-in-law, Bev Fortner, Charlotte Williams and husband Butch; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Betty Simmons-Utley, Dorothy Vanover and Judy Reedy.
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice with Pastor LuRae Hallstrom officiating. Inurnment will be at a later date in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. Military rites will be provided by the Bitting-Norman American Legion Post #27 and the Army National Guard at the mortuary. A register book will be available to sign from 9 AM to 9 PM with family greeting friends from 6 to 7 PM Friday at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation in care of the mortuary. Condolences may be left online at www.harmanwrightmortuary.com.
