Berwin R. “Rick” Shaffer, III, 57 years of age, of Lincoln, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at Bryan Medical Center East in Lincoln. He was born on May 16, 1959 in Beatrice to Berwin R. “Dick” Jr. and Roselyn (Burd) Shaffer. Rick attended Rural District 101 before moving to Pickrell and attending grades 2 – 6. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1977. Rick was active in the VICA program winning an award. He graduated with an Associate’s Degree from Southeast Community College in Milford in Electrical Construction. Rick worked for Grandma’s Fruitcakes and Chuck Benash’s station while attending school. He worked for Brice Engineering installing computerized dust detection systems in grain terminals. Rick married Julie Mockenhaupt in June of 1982. They later divorced. In 1984, Rick went to work for Linweld Air Separation Plant in Waverly, now Matheson as an A Operator and had been named Plant Manager. He was a Porsche enthusiast and a member of the Great Plains Porsche Club of America for 25 years and served in many capacities including Secretary and Vice President where he organized many events and served as a certified driving instructor.

Rick is survived by his daughter, Leah Shaffer of Lincoln and her mother Julie Shaffer; step-son, Greg Mockenhaupt and wife Alison of Oakland; step-grandchildren, Connor and Alec Mockenhaupt; mother, Roselyn Shaffer of Beatrice; sisters, Peggy Doering and husband David of Beatrice, Joy Turner and husband Chris of Jefferson, Georgia; brother, Brian Shaffer and wife Miriam of Conoga Park, California; special friend, Lori Carnahan of Lawrence, Kansas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Berwin “Dick” Shaffer, Jr.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice with Pastor Dave Miller officiating. Private inurnment will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Lincoln City Mission or the American Cancer Society in care of the mortuary. Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
