Vernelle R. (Schmidt) Hueske, 98 years of age, of Beatrice passed away Monday, December 11, 2023 at the Homestead House in Beatrice. She was born on August 10, 1925 near Harbine, the fifth of ten children of Ernest and Frieda (Sandman) Schmidt. Vernelle was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Harbine and was presently a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Plymouth where she belonged to the Ladies Aid and quilters group for many years. She graduated from Plymouth High School in 1942. Before marriage to Roland Hueske on January 20, 1946, Vernelle worked at Dempsters, Store Kraft and in California during the war efforts. She then became a farm wife and mother of three children. Vernelle always had time for family gatherings, fishing, camping and her beloved family over the years.
Vernelle is survived by her children, Stan Hueske and wife Mary of Plymouth, Bev Plihal of DeWitt, Beth Detweiler and husband Gary of Lincoln; grandchildren, Sheri Murphy and husband Matt of Idaho, Annette Morrell and husband Lee of Arizona, Tom Hueske and wife Tracie of Plymouth, Tammy Olson and husband Paul of Omaha, Ben Detweiler and wife Jen of Idaho, Jason Detweiler and wife Amber of Lincoln, Abby Detweiler of Lincoln; 1 foster granddaughter-in-law, Tanya Scherling of Kearney; 18 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; and 2 sisters-in-law, Virgene Schmidt of Fairbury and Libby Hueske of Virginia. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 60 years, Roland; son-in-law, Galen Plihal; sisters, Evelyn Overbeck and husband Frank, Venita Kibbe and husband Cecil, Laveda Christ and husband Vernon, Dorothy Wagner and husband Larry, Elaine Schlake and husband John, Lois Koenig and husband Kenneth, Althea Schoeboe and husband Jerry; brothers, Elton Schmidt and wife Wilma, Harold Schmidt; grandson, Jeffrey Detweiler; foster grandson, Bryce Scherling; and parents-in-law, August and Agatha (Grabowski) Hueske.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, December 16, 2023 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Plymouth with Pastor Fred Berger officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery west of Plymouth. A family prayer service will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at the church. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Plymouth from 2 to 8 PM with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 PM. Memorials are suggested to Cottonwood Hospice, Plymouth Library and St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in care of the church elders. Harman-Wright Mortuary in Plymouth in charge of arrangements.
