Mercedes A. (Monaghan) Simmons, 84 of Lincoln formerly of Beatrice passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2019 at CountryHouse Residence in Lincoln, NE. She was born April 5, 1935 in Nebraska City, NE. Mercedes married Clifford N. Simmons on January 16, 1954. They lived in Percival, IA until moving to Beatrice in 1962. In 1984 they started spending their winters with their Florida family and friends. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, church circle, VFW Aux., a 4H leader and volunteered at the Bargain Box all of Beatrice. Mercedes was a seamstress from home and worked for NPPD in Beatrice from 1974 to 1984. Mercedes had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and working in her yard.
She is survived by her children, Steven M. Simmons and wife Sharon of Jacksonville, FL, Dale A. Simmons and wife Deb of Beatrice, Sandra J. Hays and husband Kevin of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Lauren Simmons and significate other, Jeff Sturman of Denver, CO, Sarah Kwiatkowski and husband Keith of Oldsmar, FL, Christine Jones and husband Rick of Jacksonville, FL, Michael Simmons and wife Sarah of New Jersey, Nick Simmons and wife Candice of Beatrice, Leslie Sharp and husband Jason of Beatrice, Jenna Gaston of Omaha; great-grandchildren, Caleb McKernan, Carter Simmons, Aubrie Simmons, Charlie Rinne, Colette Jones, Mason Jones, Paige Jones, Briggs Rinne, Corinne Gaston, Meredith Gaston, Sadie Kwiatkowski; brother, Dan Monaghan and wife Susie of Central City, NE; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Ruby Monaghan; husband, Clifford N. Simmons; grandson, Ryan Hays; sister, Patricia Palmer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Beatrice, NE with Fr. Robert Barnhill, officiating. Interment will follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Beatrice. A Rosary will be held 5:30 PM, October 14, 2019 at Harman-Wright Mortuary Chapel in Beatrice. . Visitation will be held at Harman-Wright Mortuary 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM on Monday with the family greeting friends from 4:00 to 5:30 PM.
