Joan Hummel Obituary

Joan Ardelle (Weerts) Hummel, 86 years of age, of rural Daykin was called to her Savior’s side on Sunday, January 28, 2024. She was born March 20, 1937, to John and Elsie (Lind) Weerts of rural Meadow Grove. She was baptized April 18, 1937, at St. Paul “Buffalo Creek” Lutheran Church of rural Tilden and confirmed her baptismal vows there on May 11, 1950. Her confirmation verse was John 14:6: “I am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”

After graduating from Meadow Grove High School, Joan attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, with a major in German and minors in Mathematics and English. She was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She graduated summa cum laude in 1958, receiving her Bachelor of Arts degree. She was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Society that same year. On March 20, 1959, Joan was united in marriage to Kent Hummel, at the University Lutheran Chapel in Lincoln. She taught German at Concordia High School in Seward while Kent finished his college education. They then moved to a home outside Daykin and began their farming operation. In addition to being a homemaker and rearing the couple’s six children, Joan also worked alongside her husband on the farm.

Joan’s Christian faith was at the center of her life, and she was an ardent lover of church music. She began accompanying church services on the piano at the age of 13. She became an accomplished pianist and learned to play the organ as well. She was an active member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church of Plymouth, where playing organ for church brought her great joy. She also enjoyed being a member of the St. Paul’s Ladies’ Aid, participating in Bible studies, quilting, and visiting homebound women of the congregation. Other things that filled Joan’s busy schedule were being a member of the Victory Extension Club, giving piano lessons to students in the area, serving as a substitute teacher in local schools and attending Daykin’s monthly Birthday Coffee gatherings. She got to marvel at the wonders of God’s creation on her nightly walks on the country roads until physical infirmity made that impossible.

Joan leaves to the hope of the resurrection her husband Kent; children, Rhonda (Bruce) Miller of Paradise, Utah, Sonja (Doug) Hummel-Dick of Crete, Illinois, Heidi (Carl) Shafer of Jacksonville, Florida, Kirsten (Amir) Alagheband of Vancouver, British Columbia, Katrina (Michael) Kearns of St. Charles, Missouri, David (Annie) Hummel of Fairbury; grandchildren, Mandy (David) Miller Cohoe, Myles (Phearen) Miller, Mindy Shafer & fiancé Steven Amerman, Elena & Sophie Alagheband, Alex, Aiden & Maddie Kearns, Coen, Bryn & Ada Hummel; great granddaughter, Charlotte Cohoe and bonus great granddaughter, Zelda Cohoe; sister-in-law, Shirley (the late Ted) Schoenrock; and many loving nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents; brother, Stanley; sister, Elna (Jerry) Heckman; grandson, James Hummel; brother-in-law, Horace (the late Ruth) Hummel; and sisters-in-law, Rosie (the late Sam) Nietfeld and Rachel (Stan) Peters.

“These are the people who have come through the great tribulation. They have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of lamb.” (Rev. 7:14)
