Iona “Tootie” Mae (Berggren) Johnson, 94 years of age, of Beatrice passed away on Friday, May 15, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Society in Beatrice. She was born on November 15, 1931 near St. Paul to Lester and Grace (Townsend) Berggren. Iona attended Belleville High School in Belleville, Kansas. She married Bill Hughes in 1948 and to this union were born 4 children. They lived in several states and then settled in Jamestown, Kansas where the kids went to school. Iona married Glenn Johnson in 1979 and to this union, she gained 5 bonus children. Iona was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice and was a regular at the Senior Center. She enjoyed traveling to visit all of her children and grandchildren, Husker football games, sewing and socializing with friends and family.
Iona is survived by her children, Billie Hughes and wife Jolene of East Moline, Illinois, Dave Johnson and wife Patti of Garden City, Kansas, Nancy Zobel and husband Terry of Omaha, Judy Walz and husband Dave of Covington, Louisiana, Jeffrey Johnson and wife Melanie of Kearney, Jerry Johnson and wife Amber of Puyallup, Washington; daughter-in-law, Virginia Hughes of Kingman, Kansas; many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Glenn on January 12, 2020; children, Harold Hughes, Jeanie Marie Emerson and husband Don, Donita Roche and husband Tom; grandson, Brian Johnson; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; and 1 brother-in-law.
Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the Lutheran Cemetery north of Scandia, Kansas. There will be no visitation. If desired, memorials may be made to the family’s choice in care of the mortuary. Harman-Wright Mortuary & Crematory in Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
