Glenn Johnson Obituary

Glenn Allen Johnson, 94 of Beatrice, NE passed away Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Beatrice Community Hospital.  He was born May 13, 1925 on a farm near Scandia, KS. Glenn served during WWII in the Merchant Marines transporting high octane fuel and planes to the Philippines and crude oil up and down both coasts.  After returning from the Merchant Marines, he farmed for a short time, worked for Montgomery Ward and B.F. Goodrich in Concordia, KS. Glenn married Marilyn Wilcox on October 25, 1948 in Concordia, KS. To this union 5 children were born. On July 1st, 1952 he started working for Nabisco Brands, living in Smith Center, KS, Garden City, KS and York, NE.  His first wife Marilyn died August 31, 1969.

In October of 1979, Glenn moved to Beatrice. Glenn married Iona “Tootie” Hughes on November 30, 1979. He retired from Nabisco on July 1st, 1987, after 35 years with the company. His nickname was the “cookie monster”. After retirement he enjoyed traveling, going to Nebraska Football games, flowers, working in the yard, coffeetime with friends, making wooden toys and misc. items from wood for the kids and grandkids. Glenn volunteered at the Community Pantry and the Beatrice Senior Center.  He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the American Legion Club and the VFW Club all of Beatrice.

Survivors include his wife, Iona “Tootie” of Beatrice; son, Dave Johnson and wife Patti of Garden City, KS; daughter, Nancy Zobel and husband Terry of Omaha, NE, daughter, Judy Walz and husband Dave of Covington, LA; son, Jeff Johnson and wife Melanie of Kearney, NE; son, Jerry Johnson and wife Amber of Puyallup, WA; step-daughter, Jeanie Emerson of Wichita, KS; step-son, Billie Hughes and wife Jolene of Moline, IL; step-daughter-in-law, Virginia Hughes of Cheney, KS;  brother, Harold Johnson of Belleville, KS; 16 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.  

He is preceded by his parents, Aaron and Carolyn (Nystrom) Johnson; first wife, Marilyn; step-son, Harold Hughes; step-daughter, Donita Roche; grandson, Brian Johnson.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 17, 2020 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Beatrice with Pastor Mark Schutt officiating. Interment will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday in the Lutheran Cemetery near Scandia, KS. The family will greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Harman-Wright Mortuary. A memorial is suggested to the family choice in lieu of flowers with mortuary in charge.
