Darlene Scherling Luehring Obituary

Darlene Joyce (Seevers) Scherling Luehring, age 93 of Beatrice, died February 4, 2026, at Lincoln, Nebraska.  She was born December 4, 1932, at home near Mission, South Dakota to Otto H. and Erna E. (Schultz) Seevers.  She was baptized December 25, 1932, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Mission, South Dakota.  The family moved west to Oregon and then to Idaho. Darlene began school (first grade) at the age of five in Parma, Idaho.  She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School at New Ulm, Minnesota beginning with the fifth grade and beginning in the seventh grade attended a country school near Winthrop, Minnesota.

Darlene was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska on April 14, 1946; her confirmation verse was Colossians 3:17.  She graduated eighth grade from St. John’s Lutheran School in Seward.  She attended Concordia High School, in Seward, for three years.  Her parents then moved to Beatrice, where she attended Beatrice High School for her senior year and graduated from there in 1950.  After graduation, she was employed by Hinz Auto, Sprague's, and Beatrice Iron and Metal.

Darlene married Vernon M. Scherling on June 6, 1954 at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk, Nebraska.  They first lived and farmed west of Beatrice and then in August of 1961, moved to a farm northwest of Jansen, Nebraska.  They had four children:  Faith, Joel, Rick, and Kelly.  Vernon died in 1970.  Darlene married Richard E. Luehring on July 28, 1973, at Peace Lutheran Church, rural Plymouth.  Darlene and her four children joined Richard and his five children, Marsha, Ernest, Cynthia, Russell and Annette, on their farm near Hollenberg, Kansas.  Richard and Darlene moved to Beatrice in 1981.

Darlene attended Southeast Community College in Beatrice from 1978-79 and received a one-year diploma in Secretarial Science.  She was employed at Biolet Corporation, the Steeple House Restaurant and Goodwill Industries.  She retired in 2002.

Darlene enjoyed going to flea markets and garage sales and collecting toys, dolls, cookbooks and cookie jars.  She excelled at sewing – everything from tiny Barbie doll clothes to the bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen shirts worn in her second wedding. She also enjoyed crocheting (afghans for each grandchild), listening to music, and writing poetry (she co-wrote a book of poetry with her brother Kenny).  She was a great cook and baker (with a family of 11 you had to be) who co-authored a cookbook with sister-in-law Joyce Kisling.  She was a member of two Jefferson County Extension Clubs.  A life-long Christian, she was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Plymouth, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Diller, Trinity Lutheran Church, Beatrice (where she served two terms on the church council), and was currently attending Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Beatrice.  Over the years, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and was an active member of church circles and altar care.  She was also a volunteer for Sewing for Babies and for the Homestead National Monument.

Darlene is survived by her children:  Faith (Scherling) and Doug Keller of Crete; Joel and Lorie (Hegemann) Scherling of Lincoln, NE; Rick and Lori (Jueneman) Scherling of Hanover, KS; Marsha (Luehring) and Randy Allen of Smith Center, KS; Ernie and Shelley (Griffith) Luehring of Melbourne, FL; Cynthia (Luehring) Parde of Papillion, NE; and Russell and Bonnie (Callender) Luehring of Hanover, KS.;  24 grandchildren and 45 great grandchildren; sister Joanne (Seevers) and Richard Zutz of Norfolk, NE; brother Tom and Connie (Christ) Seevers of Lincoln, NE; sisters- and brothers-in-law:  Doris (Hartmann) Seevers, St. Louis; Leola (Scherling) and Ron Weers of Diller; Delores (Scherling) and Ted Kessner of Lincoln; Twilla (Smith) Kisling of Beatrice, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
