Alta Louese (Schaeffer) Smith

Alta Louese Smith, 93, Beatrice, NE passed away at her home on Tuesday, September 24, 2019. She was born September 19, 1926 in Tiffin, MO to Albert and Lula (Killebrew) Schaeffer.  Attended Union Point School in Tiffin, MO, moved to Richardson County Nebraska when she at 15 years old. She lived in Hebron, NE and moved in 1970 to Abilene, KS & Beattie, KS, moving to Beatrice in 1988. Alta married Robert Gresham in December 1942 and Gerald Smith on July 15, 1967.  She was a member of the American Legion Aux. in Beattie, KS, the VFW club in Hebron, NE, a past member of the United Methodist Church of Beattie, KS and Centenary United Methodist Church. Alta worked as a waitress, J & J wire before being a fulltime grandma. She enjoyed sewing for church projects, making quilts of valor, bird watching, bowling, babysitting for her grandchildren and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Smith of Beatrice; children, Robert Gresham and wife Linda of Falls City, NE, Sharon Boatman and husband John of Beatrice, Janice Kenley of Beatrice, Carmen Jensen and husband Jeff of Decatur, Alabama, and Kevin Smith and wife Stephanie of Beatrice; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents; great-granddaughter, Payton R. Richards; 2 sisters, Nina June Schaeffer and Wanell Church.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Centenary United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Schutt officiating.  Graveside services will be held at 1:30 PM in the Humboldt Cemetery, Humboldt, NE. A memorial is established to Centenary United Methodist Church with the mortuary in charge. Visitation will be held from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM Monday, September 30, 2019 at Harman-Wright Mortuary, Beatrice with the family greeting friends from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM www.harmanwrightmortuary.com Harman-Wright Mortuary of Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
