Shirley A. (Noakes) Bruns

Shirley A. Bruns, 85 years of age, of Beatrice passed into the arms of the Lord on December 17, 2016. She was born to Laurence and Grayce (Cornelius) Noakes of Filley on July 5, 1931 in Beatrice. Shirley resided in Filley all of her elementary and high school years. She graduated from Filley High School in May of 1948 and attended Doane College in Crete for one year. Shirley married John H. Bruns of rural Filley on August 21, 1949 at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. She was an air force wife for 23 years, living in Nebraska, Missouri, Bermuda, Ohio and Michigan. After her husband’s retirement in 1974, they moved to Beatrice and resided there ever since. Shirley was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Beatrice, and was the organist there for many years. She was a past president of the Women of the ELCA, served on the worship committee and also played keyboard in the praise band. Shirley and her husband enjoyed traveling, making trips to Europe, Canada and all over the United States. She also enjoyed cooking and baking.

Shirley is survived by a son, David Bruns of Beatrice; daughter-in-law, Carylon Bruns of De Graff, Ohio; sister-in-law, Marianne Noakes of Filley; 5 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, John; parents Laurence and Grayce Noakes; brother, Don Noakes; and son Alan Bruns.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Beatrice with Pastor Kathee Forrest officiating. Interment will follow in the Filley Cemetery near Filley. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 AM Wednesday in the church parish hall. Visitation will be held from noon to 8 PM with family greeting friends from 6 to 7 PM Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice. Memorials are suggested to the family’s choice in care of the mortuary. Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
