John Mar

John Mar passed away Sunday, May 1st, at the age of 79. John was born See Jung Mar in Canton, China on 1/20/37. He came to the United States at the age of 12 and lived with relatives in Fresno, CA.

He briefly attended Texas Tech University and married Kathy (Chung Kow) Wong on 12/12/1964. They purchased a Kentucky Fried Chicken in WaKenney, KS, where their oldest son Ken was born on 6/3/1966. Shortly afterwards they moved to Beatrice, NE, where they owned and operated the Holiday Inn Restaurant and Motel. Their youngest son Kevin was born on New Year’s Day, 1971. Mar's Fine Foods opened in 1977, and John and Kathy operated this restaurant until they retired at the end of 2000.

John was preceded in death by his wife Kathy in 2011, as well as his parents; brother, Ken Mar; sister-in-law, Cindy Moy and brother-in-law Alan Chu.

He is survived by his sons, Ken (Lisa) Mar and Kevin (Julie) Mar, both of Omaha, and his grandchildren Katy (20), Jack (16), Adam (11), Brady (10) and Chloe (7); he is also survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law Amy Mar of Los Angeles, CA, Linda and Li Lee Louie, Lia Chu, and Tai and Fu Wong of Albuquerque, NM, Michael Moy of Chicago, IL, Karen and Gary Kamtz of Peru, NE, Dave Chu of Los Angeles, CA, Wayne Wong of Lincoln, NE, and Nancy Chu and Mary Wong of Omaha, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held on May 6th at 1:00 p.m. at Divine Shepherd Lutheran Church, 15005 Q Street, Omaha, NE. In lieu of flowers memorials can be sent to Harman Wright Funeral Home, 623 Elk Street, Beatrice, NE 68310.
