Elaine Ruth (Bergmeier) Scherling, 87 years of age, of Beatrice, formerly of Diller, passed away Monday, October 3, 2016 at the Homestead House in Beatrice. She was born on October 8, 1928 at DeWitt to John and Minnie (Schuerman) Bergmeier. Elaine grew up in the DeWitt and Plymouth areas. She married Arnold Scherling on February 22, 1948 in Plymouth. Elaine lived in Deshler from 1951 to 1954 and Plymouth from 1954 to 1968 before moving to Diller. She was a former member, Sunday school teacher and choir member of St. Paul Lutheran church in Diller and a current member of St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice. Elaine was also a member of the Diller Community Club, Senior Citizen’s Club, ELCA church group and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed oil painting, baking pies, flower gardening, bird watching, dancing and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
Elaine is survived by a son, Rodney Scherling and wife Mary of Beatrice; 2 daughters, Cindy Bartlett and husband Keith, Joyce Carpenter and husband Tom, both of Diller; 4 grandchildren, Wade Scherling and wife Kylie, Colby Bartlett, Josh Carpenter and wife Traci, Jon Carpenter and wife Sierra; 4 great grandchildren, Elyse and Eli Scherling, Randilyn and Remi Carpenter; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Arnold on December 13, 1975; son, Randel Scherling; granddaughter, Andrea Scherling; 4 brothers, Harvey, Arnold, Robert and Harold Bergmeier; sister, Viola Janssen; and an infant sister, Arlene Bergmeier.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, October 7, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church in Beatrice with Pastor Myron Meyer officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. Visitation will be held from 9 AM to 9 PM Thursday, October 6, 2016 at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice. Memorials are suggested to the Andrea Scherling Scholarship Fund in care of the mortuary. Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
