Dr. Gill Cowan Wright, Jr.

Dr. Gill Cowan Wright, Jr., 88 of Alma, Nebraska died Tuesday, August 9, 2016  at the SouthLake Village, Lincoln, NE.  He was born February 11, 1928 at his home in New Bridge, Oregon to Gill Cowan and Lucille Blue Wright.  He graduated from Richland High School and Oregon State University.  After which he spent two years in the Navy during WWII.  He graduated from Kansas State University with a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.  

He married Bonnie Lou Lillard on February 12, 1956 at Great Bend, Kansas.  They first lived in Manhattan, KS.  In 1960, after Gill’s graduation, they moved to Alma, NE.   Gill owned and operated the Alma Veterinary Clinic for nearly 40 years.  He was a member of the Alma United Methodist Church, Elks, Masons, and Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association.

Gill’s second love, after Bonnie, was golf and he continued to play into retirement.  Education was very important to Gill and he served on the school board for 12 years.  He handed out each of his sons’ diplomas at their graduations. Gill attend morning and afternoon “coffee,” but always brought his own decaf green tea bag.  As a veterinarian, animals were always around.  He leaves his nerf ball fetching cat George.

He is survived by 4 sons, Gill Cowan Wright III and wife Marcia of Nashville, TN Vaughn Wright and wife Tina of Beatrice, NE, Brett Wright and wife Julie of Lincoln, NE and Clinton Wright of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Gill IV, Geoffrey and Mikki Wright, Lexa, Elizabeth, Jacob and Joseph Wright, Megan, Derek and Kelsey Wright; nieces and nephews.

Gill was preceded in death by his wife Bonnie (July, 2014) parents, 1 brother, John and 1 sister, Norma Jean Haller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 15, 2016 at the Alma United Methodist Church, Alma, NE with Pastor James Bendorf, officiating. Visitation will be held 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma. Burial will be in the Alma Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion Post #118, Alma, NE and the U.S. Navy Honor Guard. A memorial has been established to the family's choice.   A register book is also available online atwww.harmanwrightmortuary.com for messages of condolence.
