Charley F. Hammond, 84 years of age, of Beatrice, passed away at his home on Monday, July 6, 2015. He was born on May 9, 1931 in Branchland, West Virginia to Clarence and Ethel (Yates) Hammond. Charley proudly served his country towards the end of the Korean War in the United States Army. After being discharged from the Army, he moved from Kentucky to Nebraska where he met and married Marilyn Dorn on December 21, 1959 in Syracuse. Charley worked several different jobs including construction, truck driving and as a janitor. Charley and Marilyn helped build the Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island and were currently members of Church of Christ in Beatrice. He was a Skywarn volunteer during the 1980’s. Charley enjoyed bowling, storm chasing, hunting, fishing, telling stories, and especially spending time with his family.
Charley is survived by his wife, Marilyn; 2 daughters, Cathy Becker and husband Joel of Beatrice, Debra Hoadley and fiancé Alan Sims of Lincoln; 4 grandchildren, Sheena, Megan and Andrew Hammond, Britney Scott; 11 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Bonnie Parker of Marion, Ohio, Ella Hammonds of Catlettsburg, Kentucky; brother, Clyde Hammonds and wife Becky of Ashland, Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son; 3 sisters; and 1 brother.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, July 17, 2015 at the Church of Christ in Beatrice with Minister LeRoy Koehler officiating. There will be no visitation. A memorial is suggested to the family’s choice in care of the mortuary. Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice in charge of arrangements.
